The Higashi Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii was established in Honolulu in 1916, with the currrent temple being built at the Alaneo street location in 1983. The temple is a gathering place to listen to the Buddhist teachings, and hosts many community classes and events throughout the week.
Learn:
HHMH hosts study groups led by Rinban Kawawata throughout the month, including Basic Buddhism in Japanese, and studying the Larger and Meditation Sutra in English.
Listen:
We have Sunday morning services every week, starting at 10am. We also have morning chanting evey day at 7am, (excepting Sundays and the 28th day of each month). These are open to the public and are an opportunity to see and experience a Japanese Buddhist service. On the 28th of each month we have a memorial service for the founder of our temple, Shinran Shonin. This service has the more formal chanting followed by a recitation of the 8th Abbot Rennyo Shonin's letter.
